When you’re Dave Grohl, you can kind of do what you want. And apparently what Grohl—and his Foo Fighters bandmates—wanted to do during the pandemic was make a horror movie. The result, Studio 666, lands in theaters in February, and now we’ve got the tiniest teaser.
According to Deadline, the movie is about “what happens when the legendary rock band rents an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history, to record their 10th album. Trouble is, frontman Grohl is creatively blocked, and when evil forces in the house sink into his consciousness, the creative juices begin flowing but so does the blood. Can Foo Fighters complete the album, with the band still alive to tour?”
The screenplay, by Jeff Buhler and Rebecca Hughes, is based on a story by Grohl, and the film is directed by BJ McDonnell, who has directed several music videos for the band Slayer and worked as a camera operator for James Wan (Malignant). The title plays on the name of the band’s actual studio, Studio 606, as well as the obvious 666 reference.
It kind of makes sense that the Foo Fighters wanted to make a movie; even their earliest music videos were quirky and inspired, and “Everlong” is basically a horror short. The teaser gives little away about the film, other than that there are monsters and a creepy book and some too-chipper neighbors.
Studio 666 premieres in theaters on February 25th.
